Electronic music is used to describe music created using electrical instruments and technology, this includes electric guitars, sound synthesisers and computers. Electronic is hugely popular today and is largely dominated by DJs who can create full albums and perform for hours on end using just a laptop. However, electronic music first came to be at the beginning of the 20th century and it has travelled a long road of technological advancement and innovation to get where it is today.

Electronic instruments were first introduced in the 1920s and 30s, and by the 40s magnetic audio tape meant musicians could tape and then modify their recordings by altering the speed and direction. These developments led to the emergence of electroacoustic tape music in Egypt and France, by 1953 music produced using just electronic generators had come about in Germany and electronic music was also being made in Japan and the US.

During the early 1960s live electronics was being pioneered in Europe and America, and in the 70s and 80s electronic music became increasingly influential on popular music. Sub genres such as disco, new wave and synthpop emerged which made use of electronic drums and more advanced synthesisers.

The rise of dance music at the end of the 80s and throughout the 90s has continued into the present day. Contemporary electronic music is now incredibly varied; ranging from experimental art music to popular electronic dance music (EDM) such as house music, techno, drum and bass and dubstep. EDM has gained worldwide cultural and commercial significance, with entire radio stations, websites, publications and festivals dedicated to the genre. Artists such as Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Skrillex, Daft Punk and Tiesto have also gained worldwide popularity and sold out massive shows across the globe.

The popularity of dance music and its unlimited versatility has also meant that new artists are constantly coming onto the scene, working their way up from playing at bars to independent events and leading nightclubs and even headlining entire festivals.
