Arsenal F.C. is a professional football club that competes in the Premier League, which is the top flight of English football. The club is based at Emirates Stadium which has a capacity of 60,704 and is located in Islington, London. Arsenal’s current manager is Mikel Arteta who has filled the role since 2019. Emerick Aubameyang was the team’s last previous captain, however he was stripped of the title in December 2021 and Arteta is yet to pass the responsibility to another player.
The club was founded in 1886 as Dial Square Football Club, before changing its name a month later to Royal Arsenal, and then again to Woolwich Arsenal in 1893. That same year Arsenal became the first team from the South of England to play in the English Football League and in 1904 they reached the First Division.
Arsenal’s glory years were under the management of Arsene Wenger who was appointed in 1996. Wenger signed players such Patrick Viera and Thierry Henry and led the team to a number of league and cup victories throughout his 22 years as manager. Most notably, Arsenal won the Premier League in 2003-2004 without losing a single match, and setting an unbeaten record of 49 games with defeat.
In July 2006, Arsenal moved into the Emirates Stadium, following 93 years at Highbury and in the 2005-06 season they became the first London club to reach the Champions League final in the cup’s history. In 2016-17 Arsenal won the FA cup for the 13th time, becoming the most successful club to ever compete in the tournament.
Wenger left Arsenal in 2018 and since then the club has been managed by Unai Emery, Freddie Ljungberg and since December 2019, former club captain Mikel Arteta has stepped into the role. Arsenal finished the 2019 season in eighth place and failed to qualify for a European competition for the first time in 26 years.
