Liverpool FC

Liverpool Football Club is a professional English football team that competes in the top tier of English football, the Premier League. It is one of the most valuable and widely supported clubs in the world. The club was founded in 1892 and has been based at Anfield since its formation, where the stadium has a capacity of 53,394.

History

John Houlding founded Liverpool in 1892, and it joined the Football League the following year before being promoted to first division in 1896 and winning its first league title in 1901. It was not until the 1970s and 80s however that Liverpool truly established itself as a force to be reckoned with in English football. Over the course of four managers, from the years 1964 to 1991, the club won a combined eleven League titles and four European cups. In 1983 they won the League, League Cup and European Cup, making them the first English team to win three trophies in a season.

In 1985, Liverpool reached the European Cup final again against Juventus at Heysel Stadium. Prior to kick-off Liverpool fans stormed a fence separating the supporters of both sides and charged at the Juventus fans which caused a retaining wall to collapse and resulted in the death of 39 fans, most of which were Italian. The tragedy is known as the Heysel Stadium disaster and resulted in English clubs being banned from European competitions for five years and Liverpool receiving a ten-year ban which was later reduced to six.

Liverpool faced tragedy once again in 1989 when hundreds of Liverpool fans were crushed against perimeter fencing at the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest. 94 fans lost their lives that day, and 97 lost their lives in total, the incident is known as the Hillsborough disaster and it led to legislation requiring top division football teams to have all seated stadiums.

Following the resignation of Kenny Dalglish in 1991, Liverpool went on to have a turbulent 25 years. The team had a few notable victories, such as winning the treble in 2001 under the management of Gérard Houllier but struggled to maintain consistency in its triumphs. Liverpool were also sold twice between the years of 2006 and 2010, providing further instability.

Jurgen Klopp was appointed as manager in 2015 and under his reign, Liverpool has won the Champions League six times, the FIFA Club World Cup for the first time and the Premier League for the first time in 30 years. The club also set a number of records during their recent Premier League winning season, including winning the league with seven games remaining which is the earliest any team has ever won the title.
