Manchester City FC

Manchester City Football Club is a professional English club that competes in the top tier of English football, the Premier League. Manchester City was founded in 1880 and originally called St. Mark’s (West Gorton), before becoming Ardwick Association Football Club and eventually Manchester City in 1894. The club is based at the Etihad Stadium in East Manchester, it has a capacity of 53,400 and Manchester City has been there since 2003. Manchester City’s current manager is Pep Guardiola, who has filled the role since 2016 and Fernandinho has been the captain since 2020.

History

Manchester City entered the Football League in 1892 and won the FA Cup, their first major competition, in 1904, becoming the first club in Manchester to win a major honour. However, following their FA Cup triumph, the team faced financial allegations, player suspensions and a fire at their home ground.

It wasn’t until 1934 that City won the FA Cup again and in 1937 they won the Football League for the first time, only to be relegated the following season. 20 years later, Manchester City reached the FA Cup finals in 1955 and 56, winning the second. However, the team was relegated once again in 1963 and the club was also struggling due to low attendance.

A new management team was appointed in 1965 and City’s performance improved, with them winning a number of cups and titles in the late 60s and 70s. Unfortunately, this revival was followed by a long period of decline for Manchester City. The club hired a plethora of new managers during the 80s and 90s, with none of them bringing considerable success. City were relegated from the Premier League in 1996 and again to the third division two seasons later. They made a slight comeback under the management of Joe Royle, making it back into the top division briefly before facing relegation again in 2001.

Kevin Keegan replaced Joe Royle and City were back in the top division by 2002, that same year qualifying for European competition for the first time in 25 years. The club stayed around the mid table for the next five years whilst also finding themselves in a financially precarious position.

In 2008, the club was purchased by Abu Dhabi United Group and a number of high profile players were bought, however performance did not seem to immediately improve. Investment in world class players continued and eventually results were delivered with City winning the FA Cup in 2011, their first major trophy since 1976. In the same week the club also qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 1968. The 2011/2012 season was full of triumphs as City also went on to win its first ever Premier League that year.

After an incredible 2011/2012 season, expectations were not met in the years that followed and in 2016 Pep Guardiola was brought in as the new manager. Under Guardiola Manchester City has won ten league and cup titles, making him the most successful manager in the club’s history.
