The UEFA Champions League, also referred to as The Champions League, is an annual football competition between the top division European clubs organised by the Union of European Football Associations. The Champions League is the most prestigious European football competition and one of the most renowned football tournaments in the world. The format of the competition consists of a round robin group stage to qualify for the double-legged knockout stage followed by a single leg final. The 2022 Champions League final will no longer be held in St Petersburg and will instead take place in Paris. Securing tickets for Champions League matches can be challenging if you are not a member of any of the competing clubs, however Vivaseats can offer some of the best seats and hospitality packages for every game. Contact our dedicated customer service team for assistance in organising every aspect of your experience.
The Champions League was first introduced in 1955 when it was commonly known as the European Cup and laid out as a straight knockout tournament only open to champions of European domestic leagues. In 1992, the competition was renamed The Champions League with the round robin group stage being added the previous year and multiple entrants from certain countries being allowed to enter as of 1997.
The tournament commences in late June every year with a preliminary round, three qualifying rounds and a play-off round, all played over two legs. The six surviving teams from this round then enter the group stage to join 26 teams who are automatically qualified, and these 32 teams are drawn into eight groups of four to compete against each other in a double round-robin system. The winners and runners up from the round-robin stage then enter the knockout phase which concludes with the Champions League final in late May or early June. The team that wins the Champions League qualifies for the following year’s tournament, as well as the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup and also receives prize money of €20,000,000.
