The men’s Six Nations Championship is the oldest international rugby union tournament in the world and there are also annual tournaments for women’s and under 20s rugby. The tournament is organised by the unions of the six participating nations, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. Matches for the tournament are hosted across all of the six nations, with each team playing every other team once to make a total of 15 matches. You can find top tier seats and hospitality packages at all six stadiums with Vivaseats, contact our customer service team for more details and assistance in organising every aspect of your experience.
The men’s Six Nations began as the Home Nations Championship in 1883, a tournament played between England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. France joined the competition in 1910, making it the Five Nations Championship and Italy in 2000, establishing the tournament as the Six Nations Championship.
England and Wales have been champions on the most occasions, both with 39 titles but England with the most outright wins of 29. Since Italy joined the championship, only Italy and Scotland have failed to win the Six Nations title.
The Six Nations tournament commences on the first weekend in February and concludes on Super Saturday which falls on the second or third Saturday in March. Each team plays every other team once with home ground advantages alternating from one year to the next. Teams receive a number of points per game, 0 points for a loss, 2 for a draw, 4 for a win, 1 for scoring four or more tries, 1 for losing by 7 points or fewer. A team that wins all their games, also known as a Grand Slam, are automatically awarded 3 extra points.
Before 1994, teams with equal match points would share the championship. However, since then ties have been decided by considering the points difference of the teams, followed by which team scored the most tries if this were also to be a draw.
