History

The UFC was founded in 1993 with the intention of establishing what the most effective martial art was in a contest with minimal rules and no weight classes between competitors of different fighting disciplines. However, the UFC soon evolved with stricter rules being introduced and fighters adopting effective techniques across the different disciplines, which in effect helped develop the fighting style that is today known as mixed martial arts (MMA).

Up until the mid-2000s the UFC remained relatively unheard of and struggled to pull in the viewers it needed. However once the UFC was spotlighted on the reality TV show The Ultimate Fighter, the sport attracted hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide and in 2007 the UFC surpassed boxing for the first time in terms of betting revenues.

The UFC has continued to grow, evolve and surge in popularity to this day with some fights drawing in up to 3 million viewers and up to 55,000 fans attending the fights in person.
